AGMARK is a kind of confirmation mark or certification mark  that is applied on agricultural products in India, ensuring that they have passed a standard test with respect to the set of guidelines which needs to be ensured by an office of the Government of India namely, Directorate of Marketing and Inspection.

 The term AGMARK was coined by the words ‘Ag’ which mean agriculture and ‘mark’ which stands certification mark. Firstly,  this original term was introduced as a bill in the parliament of India for the Agricultural Produce (Grading and Marking) Act. And it ends up in Agriculture Produce (Grading and Marketing) Act of India, 1937 under which AGMARK is covered in all aspects.

 205 distinct commodities of Pulses, Cereals, Oils, Vegetable Oils, Fruits and Vegetables, and other semi-prepared items like Vermicelli are covered under AGMARK standards quality.

AGMARK Certificate is granted by Indian Government. It incorporates

  • agricultural, horticultural items

  • either partly produced, partly manufactured or entirely produced food, beverages.

In our country, some state possessed AGMARK research centers are situated which helps in employing AGMARK affirmation. Respectively which act as testing and certifying centers.

In addition to the Central AGMARK Laboratory in Nagpur,  there are Regional AGMARK Laboratories in respected 11 nodal urban areas (Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Kanpur, Kochi, Guntur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Rajkot, and Bhopal).

Every regional laboratory has practical experience in the testing and fully furnished. So the item can be tested accordingly.

  • AGMARK Laboratories

    The AGMARK certification is granted by the state-owned AGMARK laboratories located across the nation.

    In addition to the Central AGMARK Laboratory (CAL) in Nagpur, there are Regional AGMARK Laboratories (RALs) in the respected 11 nodal cities (Mumbai, New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Kanpur, Kochi, Guntur, Amritsar, Jaipur, Rajkot, Bhopal).

    Every regional laboratories is well equipped and specialized in testing of products.

  • Commodities and tests

    The testing done across these laboratories which include chemical, microbiological, pesticide residue, and aflatoxin analysis.

     AGMARK covers spices, ghee, butter mustard oil, honey, food grains (wheat), wheat products (atta, suji, and maida), gram flour,soyabean seed, bengal gram, ginger, oil cake, essential oil, oils and fats, animal casings, meat and food products.

  • How AGMARK is different from FSSAI ?
    • AGMARK is  a certification mark which has to be approved by Agricultural department  while FSSAI is a government agency and it does not need approval of any department.

    • AGMARK Covers all the agricultural products while  FSSAI  covers all food products.

    • AGMARK  Governed by Agriculture Produce (Grading and Marketing) Act of India, 1937 while  FSSAI is a result of  Food Safety and Standard Act, 2006 as this agency has been made according to the provisions of this Act only.

  • AGMARK Registration

    Step 1 : applicant may apply through visiting website https://dmi.gov.in in case of online, otherwise get the application form from the nearest office of DMI (Directorate of Marketing and Inspection ).  Application Form – A is used for Certificate of Authorisation for Grading and Marking of commodities.

    Step 2 : some mandatory documents are also required to be attached along with the application form.

    Step 3 : Registration fee may vary, but it will always be paid by the method of Demand Draft.

    Step 4 : there are some eligibility criteria for certification under AGMARK,

    • There must be necessary infrastructure for processing of commodities.

    • They either must have their own laboratory or they have an access to approved laboratory which is important for grading. [in case of accessing an approved lab, the consent letter of laboratory also furnished under Form A-3]

    After fulfilling these conditions, application should made to DMI for getting Certificate of Authorisation. It will be granted just after the completion of verification process and it may take thirty to forty days.

    Step 5 : for the renewal of Certificate of Authorisation, application may be made under Form A-4 for Rs. 5000.
